Taiwan is an island in East Asia, and was first settled by indigenous people 6,000 years ago before being annexed by China in the 17th century. 

Despite it's tumultuous history of Japanese and Chinese rule, Taiwan has rapidly grown as an exporter, and ranks 15th in GDP per capita in addition to being one of the world’s most densely populated countries.
