KAOHSIUNG
Kaohsiung is an ever-expanding city on the southwest coast of Taiwan, boasting a population of 2.8 million people. The city has an overwhelming amount of cultural, historical, and artistic sights, and there is truly something for everyone.
On the search for culture? Head to Fo Guan Shan Monastery, the largest Chinese Buddhist monastery in Taiwan that is famed for its advocacy of humanist Buddhism that promotes modernizing the philosophy by incorporating advanced technology. Or perhaps take a trip to Lotus Lake to enjoy the brightly colored pagodas and statues that particularly pop on a sunny day.
History lovers may wish to travel north to the historic capital city, Tainan. If nature is your forte, enjoy a walk up to the Martyrs Shrine for stunning views. Just keep a firm grip on your belongings in case a mischievous monkey swings by!
The points of interest above are quite spread out. If traveling independently, utilizing the taxis that will be waiting at the port can save you time and help you see more. While Kaohsiung has a tram system, it isn’t very convenient when considering the affordability of taxis in Taiwan.
TIP!: Take a moment to pick up a taxi card at the tourist desk inside the cruise terminal. It will have most of the top destinations listed in both English and Mandarin in addition to fare and ride times.
If you don't want to stray too far from the ship, the Pier-2 Art Center is approximately a 20 minute walk away from the port. There you will find galleries, shops, and cafes among poignant murals and abstract statues. New installations and exhibitions are constantly cycling through, and the center provides a great insight into the modern day ideas and perspectives in Taiwan.
Kaohsiung has so much to offer, so be sure to walk off the dock with a game plan in mind to ensure you make the most of it!
