ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA
The Zanzibar Archipelago is a group of islands located just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. Its advantageous position in the Indian Ocean made it a powerful trading hub for centuries, earning it the nick name “Spice Islands.” Arab, European, African, and Indian influences all molded Zanzibar through the years, making it a unique destination with fascinating architecture, food, and culture that you won’t find anywhere else.
Cruise ships that visit Zanzibar must tender in, and tenders arrive into Stone Town on Unguja, AKA Zanzibar, the largest island of the archipelago.
Stone Town itself is a labyrinth of alleyways lined with shops, restaurants, and homes. Key points of interest for history buffs include the Anglican Cathedral/Old Slave Market, the Old Fort, the Hamamni Persian Baths, and the Old Dispensary. Curious about culture? Check out the Freddie Mercury Museum and the Princess Salme Museum. Foodies can’t miss the Forodhani Night market. Shoppers will be delighted by the numerous shops in Stone Town as well as the Darajani market. Everything is within a 1km radius, making it the perfect place to wander around and get lost.
Zanzibar also has exciting wildlife spotting opportunities. Jozani Forest is the only national park in Zanzibar, and its home to the only population of Red Colobus Monkeys in the world as well as birds, snakes, butterflies, and beautiful flora. If you prefer to seize the sea instead of the forest, head to Changuu Island (AKA Prison Island). Changuu Island was originally a place where slaves were detained. But today, it has a thriving tortoise population with massive tortoises well older than 100 years old.
Speaking of the sea, Zanzibar is famous for its beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and incredible diving and snorkeling opportunities. Some of the top beaches to consider visiting are Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Bwejuu, and Matemwe beach. If you don’t want to travel too far, there is a public beach in Stone Town. Be sure to pay a visit in the evening for beautiful sunsets and an incredible look at local life. (Tip: Look for the young men flipping off a tire on the edge of the beach next to Forodhani Park!)
The people of Zanzibar are warm and welcoming, and you’re sure to have a memorable experience no matter what you choose to do.
