WARNEMUNDE (BERLIN)
The seaside charms of Warnemunde immediately become clear after a short walk away from the port area. As you walk along the inner banks of Alter Strom, lined with fishing vessels and restaurants and cafes, back towards the river inlet to spend an afternoon lounging in the sun on the miles long Warnemunde beach, the appeal becomes immediately clear.
That being said, the local area isn’t the main reason why cruise lines visit this port of call. Warnemunde is the coastal gateway to Germanys largest city, and its capital- Berlin. Ships will often be in port until the later evening, or sometimes even overnight. The reason for this is that the distance from the port in Warnemunde to Berlin is approximately 150 miles /240km. This distance is navigable both by road and also by train. The journey each way normally takes about 2.5-3 hours.
Due to the sheer size of the city, and the amount of time you have there, it is recommended to have a tour guide with you. Not only to explain all the sights you are visiting, but to also navigate language barriers as well as save time in figuring out how to get around from place to place. However if you do wish to navigate the city independently, soon we will publish a how-to guide for getting there from the port, and also information regarding sightseeing options is listed below.
If you’ve been to Berlin before or the 7 hour round trip isn’t something you fancy, then a visit to Rostock might be something you’d be interested in. This seaport town located 7 miles /11km south of Warnemunde has history dating back to the 14th century. In fact, Rostock University is one of the world’s oldest, with a founding year of 1419. Right near the university is a collection of popular walking streets for shopping and restaurants, and attractions of the town include New Market Square and St Mary’s Church.
