USHUAIA
Ushuaia is the capital of the Tierra del Fuego region of Argentina. It’s familiarly referred to as “El Fin De Mundo”, which translates to “the end of the world”, as it is the southernmost point of the continent. Ushuaia is a popular launch point for travelers venturing down to Antarctica and into Patagonia.
Ushuaia is a compact town, and you’ll find shops, restaurants, and cafes lining Avenue San Martin, which is the main thoroughfare. Be sure to try some Beagle Channel King Crab and chocolate—two specialties of the region. One street over, you’ll find a pleasant waterfront walkway that will take you to Plaza Islas Malvinas, a memorial for the Argentinean soldiers killed during the Falklands War.
If you’re curious in learning more about Ushuaia’s past, there are several museums to visit. Get the scoop on Ushuaia’s history at the Museum at the End of the World and the Maritime Museum. To learn more about early Antarctica expeditions, pay a visit to The Museum of Antarctica.
Eager to get out into nature? Head into the famous Tierra del Fuego Park. The pristine Magellanic subpolar forests are abundant with exciting wildlife, waterfalls, mountains, and landscapes. An accessible way to visit Tierra del Fuego is booking a ride on El Tren del Fin Del Mundo—a 7 stop train tour that runs through the park. For time in nature that’s closer to the port, embark on the Martial Glacier Hike. The 3.6mi/5.95km trail out and back is a climb, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning glacier views.
Need help navigating Ushuaia? Across the street from the pier is an excellent tourist information with maps, WiFi, bathrooms, and people who are able to answer all your Ushuaia travel questions.
