TAKORADI, GHANA
Takoradi, a once sleepy fishing village, became Ghana’s first deep-water seaport in 1928. It still serves as a major cargo port, with its main exports including bauxite, manganese, clinker, sawn timber, and cocoa beans. However, it also accommodates cruise ships, and is your gateway to experiencing many different sides of Ghana.
Takoradi is 7mi/11km south of Sekondi, and the area is known as the Twin Cities. You won’t find specific tourist sites to see in Takoradi-Sekondi, but visiting the Albert Bosomtwi Sam Fishing Harbour and Takoradi Beach are excellent ways to get a glimpse of local life.
There are 32 forts and castles along Ghana’s coast line, and a handful are less than 52mi/83km away from Takoradi. Two particularly striking and significant castles are the Elmina Castle, which was built in 1482 by the Portuguese, and Cape Coast Castle, which was established in 1555. Both served as major trade hubs, particularly in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and provide valuable insights into the history of Ghana. A nearby travel opportunity to consider is paying a visit to the Elmina fish market. It’s one of the busiest fish markets in Ghana, and an exciting way to experience local life.
For nature lovers, head to Kakum National Park. The park encompasses an area of 135.1 sq mi/375 sq km, and is one of the most visited attractions in Ghana. You can stroll along the forest floor, or walk along the 1,150 ft/ 350m long suspension canopy walkway that is 130ft/30m above the forest floor for spectacular views. Kakum National Park is 67mi/108km away from the port, and if it piques your interest, prior planning is essential.
Ghana is a vibrant country with kind, welcoming people, and you’re sure to enjoy whatever adventure you choose to embark on past the gangway.
