SOUTH QUEENSFERRY (EDINBURGH)

Edinburgh has served as the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. It’s home to both an impressive Old Town and buzzing New Town, making it an exciting city that has something for everyone.

But first, you might notice that your cruise ship doesn’t actually dock in Edinburgh—it will tender into South Queensferry, which is 10mi/16km away. South Queensferry is a quaint town, and the you can learn all about it at the South Queensferry Museum. There are a handful of travel opportunities nearby. Consider taking a ferry ride to visit a 12th century abbey on the island Inchcolm. Or visit Dalmeny House and Hopetourn House—two stately, historic estates with impressive grounds and architecture.

Now let’s dive into Edinburgh!

One of the first sites you’ll notice is the Edinburgh Castle looming over the city. It’s over 1,000 years old, and one of the most famous features is the One O’Clock Gun that goes over every day except for Sunday.

The city itself has so much to see and do. One of the most popular attractions is Greyfriars Kirkyard—a cemetery where some of Scotland’s most famous figures are buried. Another can’t miss place is The Royal Mile, which runs between the Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It’s the main thoroughfare of the Old Town, and it’s lined with whiskey shops, souvenirs, intriguing alleyways, and the impressive Saint Giles Cathedral, which is the birthplace of Presbyterianism.

Other nearby sites to consider visiting include the Holyrood Abbey and Holyrood Palace (which is the residence of the Queen). And museum lovers shouldn’t miss The National Museum and the National Galleries of Scotland.
