SKAGWAY
Skagway is a popular stop often found in the middle of Alaskan itineraries. The small year-round population of 1,500 residents doubles during peak summer months to accommodate cruise tourism, and it is a popular port for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.
Skagway’s roots lie in the 19th century Gold Rush. It was the closest waterfront access point to the Klondike gold mines, which were located 430 mi/ 695 km to the north.
Travelers would go along the Chilkoot Trail to enter the Yukon, and in 1898, the White Pass and Yukon Train lines were constructed to facilitate access. While the Gold Rush may be over, you can still ride along 65 mi/ 105 km of the original track to enjoy the beautiful Alaskan scenery.
If you are planning on staying in downtown Skagway, take a stroll along Broadway, which is the main road that spans across the seven blocks. You will find shops, restaurants and local breweries as well as locals in period costumes offering tours explaining the town’s history, particularly with a focus on the “working women” of the Gold Rush era. At the start of the downtown district, there are booths selling tours as well as a visitor information center.
This downtown area is accessible by both Skagway docks. The central Broadway Dock is directly in town while the Railroad dock is .5 miles away. You may walk or take a cruise provided shuttle for small fee if available.
For the adventure seekers, Skagway offers incredible hiking opportunities from the downtown area. Head left to Yakutania point and right to the Lower and Upper Dewey lakes and Devils Punchbowl. Or head north to the end of town where you'll find trails through the Gold Rush Cemetery leading to the Upper Reid Falls. For more hiking opportunities, be sure to stop by the Skagway visitor center for maps and further information.
Whether you choose to ride through the rugged Alaskan landscape on the train, tackle a hike, or shop and the explore through the downtown area, Skagway is an exciting port that allows you to further dive into the incredible state.
