SIHANOUKVILLE

Sihanoukville serves as a gateway into Cambodia from the sea, as it is the country’s only deep-water port. The city itself is known for it’s long coastline and beaches, but it is undeniably a developing nation. The roads are ridden with potholes, there’s trash thrown everywhere, children will hound you for money, and billboards advertising beautiful resorts sit in front of half constructed buildings.

You are probably thinking, “Wow, you guys are really selling the port……”

Stepping off the gangway with proper expectations will be the difference between a disappointing experience and  fantastic learning opportunity and chance to gain insight into the world.

Sihanoukville used to be a backpackers haven with cheap accommodations and food, warm weather, and nice beaches.  In recent years, Chinese investors have starting moving in and tearing down existing establishments to build up casinos and resorts for Chinese tourism. The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is 3 mi/ 5 km from the central downtown area. Note that the sights are spread out, and navigating the roads on foot is tricky. If you are not taking a ship organized tour, your cruise line will offer shuttle services to the main central market area or to the beach. However, there will be tuk tuk and taxi drivers eagerly waiting at the port and they will take you to your desired destinations for $10-$15usd per hour, regardless of how many are in the vehicle. Be warned that they will be aggressive in vying for your business!

While the city streets are due for some much needed redevelopment, there are some diamonds in the rough when it comes to sightseeing. Consider heading to Wat Leu, Wat Krom, and Independence Square. For a relaxed day, you can purchase a day pass to a resort, head to a beach or, our top pick, travel on a ferry to Koh Rong for ocean side hammocks, fresh seafood, and tiki huts.

Parts of Sihanoukville can be uncomfortable and sad, and that’s why you should be excited for the port. Seeing parts of the world that are so contrastingly different to what you are used to is the beauty of travel.
