SHANGHAI
Shanghai is a cultural melting pot of 24 million people, and is one of the world’s most iconic cities with endless dining, shopping, cultural, and educational opportunities.
The city is divided by the Huangpu River. On the right side you will see the Pudong District with futuristic towers, the financial district, and Maglev Train. On the left side you will find the Bund, the Shanghai Museum, and the Yuyuan Gardens. Shanghai is dense with sites and attractions, and pin pointing a few points of interest and exploring along the way in between them is a great way to travel for those in search of hidden gems and unique stumble upons.
Both sides of the city and both airports are connected and made accessible through Shanghai’s extensive, easy to use metro system. There are also Hop On Hop Off busses that operate along The Bund outside the main tourist information office.
Another exciting travel option is to head out of the city to one of the historic water towns. Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and Hangzhou are accessible from Shanghai via public transportation.
It is important to note that Shanghai has multiple cruise docking locations, and where your ship will be located will depend on it's size. Small cruise ships are able to dock downtown at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal while larger ships must dock 15 mi/ 24 km away at the Wusongkou Wharf International Cruise Terminal because they are unable to turn around in the river. If the latter is the case, your cruise line will likely offer shuttle services. You can also take a taxi all the way into Shanghai, or catch the metro at Baoyang Road, which is 2 mi/ 3 km from the port. Photos of both port areas can be found below.
We have seen travelers get dropped off at the wrong terminal and planned private tours go awry due to misinformation, making it imperative that you check with your cruise line in advance.
Shanghai has an astounding blend of history and modern advancements, and we recommend reading up on the city’s fascinating past prior to your visit.
