SASEBO

Sasebo is the second largest city in the Nagasaki Prefecture with a population of 250,000 people. It offers sightseeing options in the city itself in addition to being a gateway to other points of interest in the region.

From Sasebo, you have the opportunity to travel to Nagasaki, which is a great option to consider if it isn't included in your itinerary. It is 44mi/ 70 km away, but we recommend taking a cruise guided tour because public transport is indirect and will take around 2 hours each direction.

Visiting Hirado is a closer option, as it is located 21 mi/ 35 km northwest of Sasebo. Key sites include the Hirado Castle, the Dutch Trading Post, and the Matsura Historical Musuem. Alternatively, you could head 10 mi/ 16 km south to the cultural theme park Huis Ten Bosch, designed to replicate a Dutch village.

You may also choose to stay in Sasebo for a pleasant, relaxing day. The downtown area is walking distance from the port, and there you will find shopping arcades, the Sasebo History Museum, and various religious architecture.

TIP!: If staying in Sasebo, don’t miss out on the chance to try the famous local Sasebo Burger. Sasebo has been a major navy base throughout its history with a strong U.S military population following World War II. Local stores created their version of the hamburger to accommodate the troops’ tastes with ingredients sourced from Sasebo, and you should certainly give one a try!
