SANYA, HAINAN

Sanya is a southern Chinese port on the island of Hainan. It is often referred to as “China’s Hawaii” given the mild, tropical climate, high rise hotels, and beach areas with adjoining shopping and restaurant districts.

Cruise ships port at the artificial Phoenix Island in the southeast of Sanya Bay, and there you will find a 5 star hotel, restaurants and shopping, and a yachting marina. Upon arrival, there will only be a handful of taxis, but your ship will likely run a free shuttle service to the beach as well as one into the downtown area for a fee.

Highlights of Sanya include the Nanshan Buddhist Temple, Luhuitou Park, and the beach areas of Yalong Bay and Dadonghai. Note that these points of interest are spread out, and you will need to take transportation between them.

The most visited and most photographed point of interest to see in Sanya is the Guanyin Statue of Hainan, which is located along the coast 26 mi/ 42 km away from the port. This site was featured in the 2018 Hollywood film, ‘Meg’, so be sure to check out the movie before your trip!
