SANTAREM

Santarem is a town in the Amazon that is bordered by the Amazon and the Tapajós River—a phenomena called “The Meeting of the Waters.”  Santarem was founded by Portuguese colonists in 1661, making it one of the oldest cities in the Brazilian Amazon. Today, it has a population of approximately 300,000 residents, and it serves as a financial economic center for the western part of the state.

A great way to start your day is a stroll down the Nova Orla Fluvial Promenade, which takes you from the port to the city. Along the waterfront you’ll come across Mercado Anno 2000, which has fish, fruits, and everything in between for sale.

Downtown Santarem is bustling with color and life. Pay a visit to the bright blue Santarem Cathedral, which was built in 1751. Also consider visiting the Dica Frazao Museum and the Joao Fona Cultural Museum—two of many museums where you can learn about Santarem’s culture. And keep an eye out for all the colorful hammocks for sale! Most houses in Santarem don’t have air conditioning, and hammocks provide a much cooler surface than regular beds.

If you are eager to explore the rainforest, this port is your chance! The Tapajos National Forest is a 1.5 million-acre protected space that’s home to exciting flora and fauna. But be sure to book your tour in advanced, as these tours sell out.

Docked Discoveries Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for the pink dolphins that frequent the Meeting of the Waters!
