SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

Often seen as the architectural crown jewel of the Caribbean, thanks to its incredible indigenous and colonial history. Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, and shortly after in 1508, the Spanish government appointed Juan Ponce de Leon as the first governor of the island.

Cruise ships have the benefit of docking right at the base of Old San Juan, a compact sloping area with over 400 preserved 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial buildings.

Due to its old-world charm, fantastic food, shopping and historic architecture, it is naturally one of the most popular, and thus busiest cruise ports in the region, so just check with your cruise line where your ship will be docked, as there are a couple of piers that are a little further away than the downtown ones.

Whilst there are many amazing things to see and do once you dock, the first recommendation is being out on the open decks on the left-hand side, or the port side of the ship for the sail in. As you approach San Juan Bay, you’ll pass by the incredible San Felipe del Morro castle, a striking 16th century Spanish fortification with incredible history.

Once you do dock, you have multiple options right within walking distance from the port. To learn about our top 5 picks, check out this video.

Taking guided walking tours is also a great way to get locals first-hand inside knowledge into this incredible place, which really does feel like a walking museum.

If you have spent time here before in the Old Town, and you are looking for something a little different or further afield, you could try one of the many beach areas, check out the more modern areas of the city with its shopping options, or for nature lovers, one of the highlights for this port can be the El Yunque National Park.
