RIO DE JANEIRO
Rio de Janeiro is one of the most famous travel destinations in Brazil. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, striking mountains, historic architecture, and the biggest party in the world that happens every year—Carnaval.
The cruise port is conveniently located very close to the Centro District. Key points of interest include the Monastery of Sao Bento, the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian, the National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Royal Portuguese Reading Room. Other uniquely Rio sites in Centro District are the Lapa Arches, a striking structure of 42 arches towering 64m/210ft high, and Escadaria Selarón, a staircase covered in more than 2,000 pieces of color tiles, mirrors, and ceramics.
Curious about what the city looks like from above? Take the cable car to Sugar Loaf Mountain. The impressive ridge is covered in lush vegetation, and it offers some of the best views of the city. A visit to Christ the Redeemer Statue, one of the most iconic statues in the world, also provides breathtaking city views. It’s situated on top of Corcovado Mountain, and you can get there via tram, van, or even foot for the adventure seekers out there.
Hungry for more nature? Head to Tijuca National Park—an expansive rainforest with plenty of trails and hikes. Or perhaps wander around the Botanic Gardens to marvel at the Avenue of the Palms. Parque Lage is also a great option for birdwatchers and plant lovers. (This is where you’ll find the trailhead for the hike up to Christ the Redeemer Statue.)
No visit to Rio de Janeiro is complete without seeing the world-famous beaches. Copacabana Beach boasts 2 miles of soft, sandy beaches, and it’s a hub of activity. Keep heading around the coast to Ipanema Beach, which is the stomping ground for wealthy Brazilian elites. Behind Ipanema you’ll find Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. This huge lagoon is surrounded with cycling paths, trees, and lush vegetation. Tip: the mountainous skyline creates jaw-dropping sunset!
Rio de Janeiro is chocked full of amazing travel opportunities, and is sure to be a highlight of your cruise.
