RECIFE
Recife is the capital of the Brazilian state Pernambuco, and it’s named for the long reef running parallel to the shoreline. It’s a touristic and commercial powerhouse of northern Brazil, and has numerous travel opportunities to enjoy.
To get a taste of local life, head to the bustling San Jose Market where you’ll find everything from groceries to woven baskets. Also consider stopping into Casa da Cultura. This structure was once a prison, but the cells have been transformed into stalls selling various handicrafts. Other sites to visit include the Fort of Five Points, which houses the State Museum, as well as the Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel, the oldest synagogue in the Americas.
Fun Fact: Recife is often called the “Venice of Brazil” due the picturesque canals throughout the city.
Looking for something else to do? Journey to Olinda, a historic old city just north of Recife. Walk down Amparo Street to admire the vibrant street art, explore Sao Francisco Convent which has beautiful Portuguese tiled walls, and don’t miss visiting the Monastery of St. Benedict. Towards the northern end of Olinda there is a spectacular viewpoint overlooking Recife—Alto do Se Viewpoint.
Other further journeys to consider include the Museum of Pernambuco State, the Ricardo Brennard Institute which is a reproduction of a medieval-style castle, and the Abolition Museum.
If none of those options tickle your fancy, suit up, lather on some sunscreen, and head to Boa Viagem Beach for some fun in the sun.
