PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is a buzzing Mexican cruise port city that boasts over 100mi/160km of coastline. It sits on the Bay of Flags—one of the world’s deepest bays that is home to dolphins, manta rays, and humpback whales (from November-March only).

One of the most popular things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to take a stroll along the Malecon Seawall. This mile long coastal walkway leads to the famous Playa los Muertos, and it’s lined with restaurants, bars, vendors, and intriguing statues from famous artists. (Tip: Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for intricate sand sculptures on the beach!)

In the middle of the Malecon Seawall walkway, you’ll reach the heart of the Old Town. Marvel at the Cathedral of Our Lady Guadalupe, don’t miss the Crown of Empress Carlotta, and be sure to take photos by Los Arcos (Plaza Morelos), which is an archway by the sea. Other popular options awaiting in the Old Town include the Choco Museum and the Mirador el Cerro—a steep staircase that leads to an open tower with panoramic views.

Nature lovers are in luck, because there are numerous ways to immerse yourself into the nature of Mexico. Consider a snorkeling excursion through the blue, clear waters. Zip line through the tree tops of Puerto Vallarta’s tropical forest. Or pay a visit to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens and the Puerto Vallarta Zoo to learn about the area’s flora and fauna.

Docked Discoveries Tip: There are taxis all around Puerto Vallarta, but if you want to save some money (and are up for a local experience), hop on a public bus instead!
