PUERTO MADRYN
Puerto Madryn is a coastal city located in the Province of Chabut of Argentina. Its sweeping beach front and abundant wildlife make it a popular destination for both international and internal tourism alike.
Puerto Madryn itself is a pleasant beach town teeming with shops and restaurants. The main draw card is the beach front. You’ll see people wind surfing, kayaking, playing soccer, gearing up for diving expeditions, and soaking up the sun. Note that there are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and public bathrooms for when you need a break from the heat.
Along the sand is a pedestrian walkway boasting various statues and monuments. A significant one to keep an eye out for is the Monument to Welsh Settlers. The beach front stretches for 2.5mi/4km, and at the end you’ll come to the Disembarking (Landing) Museum and Punta Cuevas, which are excellent for learning more about the Welsh’s role in Puerto Madryn’s history. There’s also an Eco Center that is both a museum and research institute dedicated to Patagonian marine wildlife.
Wildlife is one of the main draws of this port of call, and there are several unique animal encounters to be had. For a chance to see Southern Right Whales, head to the Valdes Peninsula, which is 50-70km away from the port. The amazing creatures travel to the area every year between June and December to give birth and breed. The Valdes Peninsula is also home to seals and sea lions, which are readily spotted at Punta Delgada on the southeast side of the peninsula.
If you’re eager for a penguin encounter, you’re in luck because 2 ½ hours away from the port is Punta Tombo—home of the world’s largest Magellan penguin colony. One million penguins arrive each season, and it’s a unique chance to see these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.
Other travel opportunities that are further afield include the towns of Gaiman and Trelew. These were the first Welsh settlements in Argentina and have fascinating architecture. And don’t miss trying a traditional Welsh tea!
