PUERTO CHIAPAS
Puerto Chiapas is on the southern edge of Mexico’s Pacific Coast. The port was built in 1975 as an economic hub for shipping out agricultural goods, and the town itself is a jumping off point into the greater region.
Consider taking the 24mi/38km journey up to Tapachula, a unique town that was founded in 1486 as a tribute to the Aztecs. The colonial town is studded with beautiful buildings, and it’s the perfect place to simply wander.
Continuing past Tapachula are the Izapa Ruins. The Izapa Ruins are one of the oldest Mayan sites in Mexico, and archeologists speculate it was inhabited as early as 1500 BCE. Only a fraction of the site has been uncovered, and it’s imperative to hire a guide to add context to the remains.
If you want to stay close to home, there is a building right near the port that has a restaurant, bar, pool, and (sometimes) wifi.
Organized tours are a popular option for cruises at this port of call, but seeing the sites independently is completely possible. Email the team at Docked Discovers to learn how!
