PROBOLINGGO

Probolinggo is a small developing town of 220,000 people on the north coast of East Java that is known as being the starting point for a day drip to see Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most spectacular volcanoes.

Probolinggo is a tender port, and it can be quite a long tender ride because the narrow, protected channel can only accommodate one boat at a time. Exact time will vary depending on boat traffic, and it can vary anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. After the long ride, there are usually school children waiting shore side to greet you with local song and dance. Be sure to have the cameras ready!

If you are planning on visiting Mt. Bromo, consider taking a private or ship guided tour. It takes approximately 2 ½ hours of driving each way, and you must be in a special vehicle to be allowed through the national park.

Apart from the volcano, you can head into Probolinggo. But note that there are only a handful of sightseeing options including the Red Church, Pasar Baru traditional market, and the Probolinggo Museum. Your cruise line will likely offer a shuttle into the main downtown, which is 2 mi/ 3 km from the cruise port.

For an alternative experience, consider simply walking around the town and interacting with the people to immerse yourself into a new culture. Spending a couple hours talking with locals can often provide a greater cultural insight than museums and monuments. You never know what you might learn next!
