PRAIA, ILHA DE SANTIAGO, CAPE VERDE

Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, and it is situated on the southernmost part of the island of Santiago. It is a lively hub of life and culture with restaurants, beaches, and markets while still maintaining a relaxed island feel.

The tourism hub of Praia is in the Plateau District. You’ll find the Alexandre Albuquerque Square, Museum Amilcar Cabral, and a pedestrian street lined with cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It the perfect district for a nice afternoon stroll, and be sure to try Cachupa—the national dish of Cape Verde. For a look into local life, pay a visit to Sucupira Market. Inside the sprawling semi-covered market, you’ll find everything from clothes to handmade shoes to jewelry to vegetables.

Praia translates to beach, and not too far the cruise port you’ll find Quebra Canela beach. It is one of the most popular beaches on the island, and a great choice for relaxing and unwinding.

If you want to get out and explore more the island, there are plenty of options available. Consider visiting Cidade Velha, a well preserved town where the first Portuguese colony was established. While there, you can visit the Forte de São Filipe, which served as a defense system throughout colonial rule. Assomada is another charming Cape Verde town that has relaxed streets and the largest market on the island—Assomada Market.

The opposite end of the island is 44mi/71km north of Praia, and there you’ll find the Tarrafal Concentration Camp. People who fought colonial rule were held there until 1975, and it’s an opportunity to learn about the darker side of Cape Verde’s history. Just beyond the camp is Tarrafal Beach, which is one of the island’s most untouched beaches. Between Praia and Tarrafal is Serra Malagueta—a protected ecological area with striking views and popular hiking trails.

Praia has an exciting blend of Portuguese, African, and Brazilian cultures, and you’re sure to enjoy your port time.
