PORT STANLEY
Port Stanely is the capital of the Falkland Islands, which is situated 300mi/480km off the coast of continental South America. It is a remote, sparsely populated country that’s home to beautiful landscapes and unique wildlife.
Port Stanely itself is quite small. For reference, it’s home to a mere 2900 residents, which is a whopping 75% of the Falkland’s total population. Points of interest in the town include Christ Church Cathedral, the Historic Dockyard Museum, the 1982 Liberation Monument, and a quirky Solar System Walk. You’ll find a couple local pubs and restaurants, plenty of souvenir shops, and the post office where you can get the famous Falkland Islands postage stamp.
One of the main draws of the Falkland Islands are the abundant penguin colonies. The islands are home to 5 different species of penguins:Rockhopper, Gentoo, Magellanic, King, and Macaroni penguins. Taking a tour is the best way to see these penguins, as the colonies are far from Port Stanely and many of the roads require special vehicles.
Tip: The tours can book up fast, especially if there is more than one ship. So be sure to book early!
