NAZE, AMAMI

Amami Oshima is a 275 sq. mi / 712 sq. km island with a population of 73,000 people located between Kyushu and the Okinawa islands. Naze was an independent port town from 1946 onwards, and in March 2006 it merged with Ksari and Sumiyo to form Amami City. The name Naze is still used in reference to the port region and main district of the city that has a population slightly over 40,000 people.

While picturesque with its rising hills as a backdrop, the town itself is quite quaint. There is a small shopping arcade as well as pleasant uphill nature stroll to Ogamiyama Park behind the Takachiho Shrine that provides city and cruise ship views. There are very few dining and shopping options. Check out our unusual dining experience HERE.

The main draw Amami Oshima is the nature and scenic coastal views. Head north along the coast and beautiful beaches to the eastern side of the island to Amami Park and it's adjoining cultural institute, the Tanka Isson Memorial Museum of Art. Also, consider soaking up the views at Cape Ayamaru.

We highly recommend taking a ship offered tour if you wish to explore the greater region, as there are no public transportation options, and taxis are in short supply.

Amami makes for simple, yet beautiful port day centered around nature, and is a great chance to relax and rest up for future travel days.
