MONTEVIDEO

Montevideo is the charming capital of Uruguay that’s home to 1/3 of the country’s population. The city is teeming with culture, and has been growing as a popular tourism destination despite being in the geographical shadow Buenos Aires.

To immerse yourself in Montevideo’s culture, start with a visit to Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). The streets are lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants that are all in breathtaking buildings boasting unique architecture. It’s the perfect place to wander, and pleasant places to be sure to wander to include Plaza Constitution and Plaza Zabala.

If you want to learn more about Montevideo, head to the Carnival Museum, Museo Gurvich, and the Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art. Teatro Solis and the Metropolitan Cathedral are other key sites to see in Cuidad Vieja. For foodies, be sure to check out Mercado del Puerto for incredible grilled meats. But be warned, your meat standards may be changed forever.

Independence Square marks the line between Ciudad Vieja and the city center. The city center has a lively pace that’s expected from a capital city. While it’s a hub for workers and businesses, two points of interest tourists enjoy visiting are the Museum of Art History and the Legislative Palace. And don’t miss the change to head to the top of the city hall for Mirador Panoramico de Montevideo—a free observation area providing sweeping city views.

Eager for some beach time? Ramblas is the waterfront promenade that stretches around the coast. It leads to one of the most popular beaches, Playa Pocitos. If sand isn’t your jam, head to Parque del Prado—the largest of Montevideo’s six principal public parks

Montevideo is becoming a hot tourist destination, and after spending a day roaming the streets, you’ll see why.
