MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE

Maputo is the buzzing capital of Mozambique with a population just over 1.1 million people. It’s known for its Mediterranean style architecture and Portuguese influence with a Latino-esq ambiance.

Mozambique gained independence from the Portuguese in 1975, and entered a civil war soon after that lasted until 1992. The country is still very much in turmoil with political and humanitarian issues. But most of the problems are concentrated in northern Cabo Delgado, which is at the opposite of the end of the country from Maputo.

The country is quite underdeveloped, but Maputo is on the rise does have some travel opportunities available.

Independence square is the focal point of Maputo, and in the center you’ll see a towering statue of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique. It is flanked by the Maputo City Hall and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Nearby you’ll find the Iron House, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel as well the Tunduru Botanical Gardens, which is the perfect place to beat the heat and relax.

Tip: If you’re in Maputo on a Saturday, you may see dozens of wedding parties singing and dancing their way through the gardens!

As you continue towards the port, you can get a taste of Maputo’s past with a visit to the Maputo Fortress and Maputo’s present with a wander around the central market.

For souvenirs and shopping, be sure to go to Feima Market which is 2.5mi/4km away from the port area. It’s an expansive market where you can find clothes, woodwork, bags, scarfs, and other unique handicrafts.

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, and Maputo is a not a city where you’ll find glitz and glamor. But you will see what an authentic East African city is like. If you walk off the gangway with an open mind, it’s an opportunity to have an impactful cultural experience.
