MANTA (QUITO)

Manta is an important port town in Ecuador that’s known for its tuna fishing industry, beaches, and water sports. It’s a popular cruise ship port, and your opportunity to dip your toes into the amazing travel opportunities Ecuador has to offer.

If you wish to dive right in to local culture, visit Plaza Civica, which often hosts a local market. Or head to Mercado Central—a buzzing market where you can find everything from textiles to fish. Speaking of fish, get a taste of the sea by visiting Parque del Marisco (the fish market). You can watch local fishermen sell their fresh catches, which you can taste at the various food stalls.

Parque del Marisco is just off of Tarqui Beach. While you can swim at Tarqui Beach, swimming as boats are pulling in tuna, sharks, and swordfish might not tickle your fancy. Instead, consider going to Playa Murcielagao, which is an easy walk away from the cruise ship port. Just behind Playa Murcielago you’ll find Malecón Escénico—a boardwalk of colorful huts with various shops and dining options.

Hungry for a more immersive look into Manta? Pay a visit to Banco Central Museum to learn about the Aztec and Inca societies that controlled the land thousands of years ago.

If you want more history, head south to Montecristi. It was formed in the 16th century during the Spanish conquest, and it’s famous for its production of Montecristi Panama Hats. That’s right, Panama hats are actually from Ecuador! Click HERE to learn more. While in Montecristi, be sure to visit the Minor Basilica of the Virgin of Monserrat.

Nature lovers have options aplenty too. Isla Corazon, or Heart Island, is a two hour drive away from the port area. It’s a sanctuary for numerous bird species, and you can enjoy a boat ride around the island for world class bird watching. Another option is to head 1.5 hours south of Manta to Machalilla National Park. It has beaches, fog forest, dry forest, and islands, and you’ll have the opportunity to look for wildlife including armadillos, monkeys, and birds.
