LA GOULETTE, TUNISIA

La Goullette Cruise Port is your door into Tunisia. There are three major destinations near the port that peak traveler’s interests: Downtown Tunis, Carthage, and Sidi Bou.

Tunis lies on the northeast coast of Tunisia, and was settled in the 16th century by the Spanish. It was later colonized by the French before gaining independence in 1956. The city has since become a booming metropolis with lively streets and a vibrant city center. Avenue Habib Bourguiba is the city’s primary thoroughfare, and the center of the action. It’s lined with cafes, shops, and important business buildings as well as key attractions including Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul, French Embassy in Tunisia and Théâtre municipal de Tunis.

For culture and shopping lovers, a can’t miss spot in Tunis is the medina. It’s a sprawling maze of alleyways with dozens of covered souks selling everything from shoes to shisha pipes. There are brightly colored doors, artisans at work, and plenty of restaurants.

Other points of interest in Tunis include the Zaytouna Mosque, Belvedere Park (Tunis Zoo), and  Ksar Said Palace. Tunis is 8mi/13km away from the port area, and easily accessible via cab.

Carthage is a great city of antiquity and is 4.7mi/7.6km away from the port. It was founded in 814BC by the Phoenicians, who used the city as a hub for trade given its strategic location along the east-west Mediterranean trade route. After many prosperous centuries, Carthage fell to Rome in 146 BC. Remains from the Ancient Roman rule still remain, and you may wish to explore them for a taste of history.

f you don’t want to roam through Tunis and Carthage doesn’t intrigue you, consider heading to Tunis’s bohemian seaside suburb, Sidi Bou Said. It’s full of whitewashed buildings and blue roofs with quaint laneways that look and feel strikingly similar to the likes of Santorini and Mykonos. Sikdi Bou Said is 5.6 mi/9.1km north from La Goulette Cruiseport, and accessible via ____.

Whether you dive into the history of Carthage, relax along the streets of Sidi Bou Said, or explore Tunis, you’re sure to enjoy your day in Tunisa.
