KETCHIKAN

Ketchikan is historically known as Alaska’s first city, and affectionately known as the rain capital of the United States. This town of 13,000 people is showered on more than 200 days a year with an average rainfall of 153 in/ 388 cm.

Rain or shine, Ketchikan provides exciting opportunities on both land and sea. When it is a nice sunny day, the town can be magical, with quaint shops, local food, and brightly covered buildings. There are many nature trails nearby, as well as the opportunity to visit sights such as Saxman Native Village and the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary. Ketchikan is also the gateway to see the spectacular Misty Fjords. The most common way is by boat, but if you want a truly memorable experience, give a float plane a try.

If it is a rainy day, grab a poncho and head out, as there is still plenty on offer. The city has an abundance of history on display at it's museums and cultural centers, such as the Totem Heritage Center and the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. If you want a truly iconic Ketchikan experience, go for undercover seating at the famous Ketchikan Lumberjack Show!

Cruise ships dock right downtown in Ketchikan. In the summertime, it's common to have 3-4 ships docked at a time. This means that the cruising population can outnumber the local residents.

If you don't have touring plans through your cruise line, there are local tour options along the waterfront at the different docking berths as well as local visitor information. If you rather take the town on guide-free, the downtown area is right at your doorstep on the other side of the gangway.
