KANAZAWA

Kanazawa is the capital city of the Ishikawa prefecture, with a population just over 460,000 people, and it is a hidden gem in Japanese tourism.

Kanazawa is one of the best-preserved cities from the Edo-period with a rich, complex history, but it is typically overlooked as it lies in the shadow of Kyoto. Highlights include the Kanazawa Castle, Nagamachi Samurai district, Nishi Chaya entertainment district, and the highly photographed Higashi Chaya district. “Chaya” means teahouse, and consider getting a literal taste of Japanese culture by enjoying a traditional tea experience at one of the historic tea houses.

Another must-see is the Kenrokuen Garden, which is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan with historic sites sprinkled throughout stunning nature.

The cruise port is located 3 mi/ 5 km to the north of the city, and your ship will likely offer a shuttle into the centrally located Kanazawa Station. From there, you can walk the relatively compact city or simply hop in a taxi to travel between points of interest.

From the port, you also have the opportunity to have a unique look at Japanese history by heading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go. This picturesque mountain settlement is known for its unique building style known as gassho-zukuri, and it is a stark contrast from the chaotic city life you may see in major Japanese cities. Due to limited transport options and locale of 45 mi/ 70 km away, taking a ship offered tour is advisable.

Visiting Kanazawa is a cultural treat, and a great example of an experience you would likely not have had if not for traveling via cruise ship.
