KAGOSHIMA

Kagoshima has a population of 600,000 people, making it one of the largest cities on the southern island of Kyushu. It is best known for it's access to the volcanic island of Sakurajima, and on a clear day, you may be able to see it smoking from the ship!

Kagoshima itself is a working city with a handful of museums and a shopping arcade where you will find restaurants and stores. You may also be interested in visiting the aquarium or the Sengan-en Gardens if looking for some peace and quiet.

Other available options include taking a short ferry ride to get up close and personal with the volcano, or you can head south to Ibusuki for the famous volcanic soil sand baths. If you prefer swords to volcanos, consider heading to Chiran for its Samurai history and the Chiran Peace Museum that provides an alternative perspective on the army pilots who died during World War II.

.

The city lies 5 mi/ 8 km south of the cruise port, and while taxis will be available, your cruise line will likely offer a shuttle service. Kagoshima also has a public transport system as well as a Hop on Hop Off style bus, and you can find inexpensive day passes for the bus and ferry at the visitor services center in the terminal building.

Whatever you decide to do, Kagoshima is a relaxed, low-stress port that is great opportunity for resting up while still soaking in Japanese culture.
