JEJU CITY, JEJU ISLAND

Jeju City is the capital of the largest South Korean island, Jeju Island, which is south of the mainland with a population just shy of 700,000 people. The main draw of Jeju is it's stunning nature, and is a port where we recommend taking a tour or hiring a driver for the day.

TIP: If hiring a driver, keep the same one for the entire day because sites out of the city may not have readily available taxis.

The downtown area of Jeju City is 2 mi/ 3km from the port, and there you can find coffee shops, dining options, and shopping.  However, what makes Jeju Island special is it's many unique natural wonders. 

Jeju Island has everything from waterfalls, to mountains, to amazing geoparks such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sunrise Peak. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike up Sunrise Peak for spectacular views.

Bad weather? No problem! You can still marvel at Jeju’s natural phenomena with a trip to the Manjanggul Lava Tube that runs 5 mi/ 8 km underground with 0.6 mi/ 1 km being open for public access. It is the 12th longest lava tube in the world, but be sure to bring a jacket along, as it gets cold underground. 

One of the most unique aspects of Jeju is the Haenyo, the female abalone free divers. Learn about their stories of determination and independence at the Haenyo Divers Museum which is approximately a 30 minute drive away from the port. You may even be lucky enough to see them in action!
