ISHIGAKI ISLAND
Ishigaki is a sleepy Japanese island where you will find quaint lighthouses and beautiful beaches as opposed to skyscrapers, traffic, and subways. It is a small island with an area of 85 sq miles/ 220 sq km, and is a mere 7 mi/ 11 km wide and 8 mi/ 13 km long with a population hovering at 50,000 residents.
While small, the treasures of Ishigaki lie on the coastline. There are limited public transportation options and a larger language barrier than you may encounter in other Japanese ports. Be sure to plan accordingly.
If you are not taking an organized ship excursion, your ship may offer a shuttle to the downtown area and ferry pier, which is a perfect launch point for exploring the smaller islands off the coast.
You will also find a visitor information desk on the pier that will help you refine your travel plans and aid in translating them to a taxi driver. Japanese taxis can be pricey, which is an important tip to note to avoid sticker shock at the end of your travel day!
Whether you marvel at the blue waters through a glass bottom boat out of Kabira Bay, relax on the beach of Taketomi, or enjoy the infamous Ishigaki beef at a restaurant, you are sure to enjoy the warm climate and calm life of Ishigaki.
