INVERGORDON (INVERNESS)

Iverness is the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. The city itself is flushed with restaurants, beautiful architecture, and entertainment options, and just outside is a trove of Scottish and Celtic history, myth, and beauty.

In the city, key points of interest are the Victorian Market, the Iverness Museum and Art Gallery, and the Iverness River Walk. Be sure to pick up a walking guide from the city’s tourist office so you don’t miss a thing!

However, this is a port of call where the real attractions lie further afield.

The region is famous for its castles, and there are 4 nearby: Urquhart Castle, Cawdor Castle, Dunobin Castle, and Eilean Donan Castle. Each has a unique history, and visiting one is highly recommended. Other impressive architectural feats to admire are the Fortrose Cathedral and the Donroch Cathedral, which was erected in the 13th century.

Another point of interest for history buffs is the Culloden Battlefield Historic Site. The Battle of Culloden was one of the last armed conflicts between the Brits and Scotts, and nearly 2,000 Jacobites were killed or wounded in just under an hour.

Iverness is also your gateway to the famous Loch Ness. Consider taking a boat trip to admire the striking Scottish scenery, and be sure to keep an eye out for Nessie. Thirsty after your monster hunting? Head over the Glenmorangie Distillery to learn about the finest Highland whiskies.

While your ship will offer tours, seeing these sites on your own is quite simple. Send the team at Docked Discoveries an email to start planning your itinerary!
