ICY STRAIT POINT

Icy Straight is located just outside the entrance of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. It has a population of a mere 1000 people when combined with nearby Hoonah on Chichagof Island.

While it was originally a tender only port, a new, purpose-built cruise dock was developed and completed in 2006. This allows cruise guests to walk straight off the dock, along a ramp, and into the visitor center and welcome square. Here you’ll find the Huna Packing Company, a converted museum and shop with a restaurant on site, as well as a Tlingit interpretive center alongside other waterfront restaurants.

If you are not taking one of the ships organized tours, you can take a cheap, locally offered shuttle service to Hoonah. Alternatively you can take a pleasant 1.3 mi/ 2 km walk along the waterfront where you’ll find a few local bars and restaurants.

As far as touring options go, it’s all about the outdoors here. Popular options include Jeep / ATV nature tours, wildlife spotting boat excursions, or the ever popular “World's Largest Zipliner”, which provides incredible views on a clear day as you fly down over the rainforest at speeds up to 60 mph / 95 kmph.

Icy Straight is an exciting opportunity to dive into the wild side of Alaska… be sure to keep you eyes peeled for wildlife, you never know when you may see a bear!
