HUATULCO, Mexico
Huatulco is a stunning beach town in the Mexican state Oaxaca that boasts 20 miles of coast. It was established by Aztec merchants as a stop on their trade route, and it became a thriving port and ship yard.
If you’re keen for some adventure, Huatulco is an ideal location for water sports. Kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and snorkeling are all great options. Another fun choice is to take a water taxi to one of the 9 bays for a relaxing beach day.
Huatulco is also packed with ancient history. In pre-Hispanic times, the area was inhabited by the Tutuepec tribe, and they had many interactions with the Zapotec, Mixtec, and Aztec merchants. You can see the remains at the oldest archeological site, Boana del Rio Copalita Complex and Museum. It is spread out over 86 acres, and major points to see include the Templo Mayor, Templo de la Serpiente, and the Ball Court.
And be sure to try one of the many beach front restaurants for authentic Oaxacan cuisine! Just be sure to pick a place where the prices are listed to avoid getting charged an inflated tourist rate.
