HELSINKI

Finland’s largest city and its capital, Helsinki has history in its current location dating back to the 1600’s. Whilst having a turbulent history with various period of occupation, the city has been flourishing since Finlands independence in 1917.

This historic maritime port city is filled with elegant architecture, thoughtful city planning, markets, museums, religious architecture and more. In recent years, its culinary scene has received wide international recognition.

From the cruise docking location, the heart of the city is just over 2 miles / 3.2km away, so unless you wish to make a long walk of it, transport is required. Often cruise lines will offer shuttle services back and forth throughout the day from the port area, and the port usually offers bike rentals from the port area too.

Once downtown, you’ll be greeted by a picturesque and lively port area, with the Helsinki and Uspenski Cathedrals providing the backdrop. Dive in a little further, and you’ll find things that only Helsinki can offer. Places such as the Design District, Rock Church and Sibelius Park to name a few.

For those who have visited the city before and are looking for something different, perhaps try a visit to Porvoo, the riverside historic town with its cobblestone streets and red warehouses take you back in time, yet its stylish boutiques, restaurants and cafes keep you right in the present. Another option a little closer to Helsinki is Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress is accessible by ferry from Market Square downtown.
