HAKODATE

Hakodate is the 3rd largest city on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, with approximately 280,000 residents. It was the first city in Japan to open up to international trade in 1859 following the country’s self-imposed isolation. For this reason, Hakodate has unique Western architecture that is particularly prominent in the Motomachi District, the Goryokaku Fort (Star Fort), and the Hakodate Beer Hall.

The Goryokaku Fort is a 10 minute drive from the cruise port and is certainly a Hakodate highlight, particularly during cherry blossom season. Explore the fortress to learn about Japanese culture and history, and don’t miss out on the chance to ride to the top of the observatory where you will see why the complex is nicknamed “Star Fort”.

Get a taste for Japanese life and cuisine by stopping by the Morning Market, where you can try delicacies from the sea and even go squid fishing, an experience you won’t likely find anywhere else in the world. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try out the famous Hokkaido milk ice cream on the hills of Motomachi. Other points of interest include a trip to the hot springs, exploring the Red Brick Warehouses, and taking a ride up the Mt. Hakodate ropeway.

The downtown area is 15 minutes away from the port by car, and your cruise will likely have a shuttle service available. From there, you can hire a cab to easily get to whatever sites you may wish to see.
