FUKUOKA

Fukuoka is the largest city on Kyushu Island with a population of 1.6 million people, and has served as an important Japanese harbor city for centuries. Fukuoka as we know it today was a product of a 1889 merge between the port town of Hakata and the castle town of Fukuoka, and you will see references to both throughout the area.

Upon arrival to the port, there is a large terminal building with a full-service information desk where you can purchase a subway day pass. The city is spread out, and utilizing the subway is a financially savvy option for independent travelers.

The downtown area is 2.5 mi/ 4 km from port and if your ship does not offer a shuttle, there will be taxis readily available. Apart from countless ramen shops and name brand shopping opportunities at the Canal City shopping district, you can explore historic sites including the Kushida Shrine, Fukuoka Castle Ruins, and the Shofukuji Temple.

Fukuoka is a springboard for out of town experiences as well. Fancy a ride on a Japanese bullet train? Take the Shinkansen to Kokura Castle. Want to visit a Shinto Shrine that dates back to 905 CE? Head to Dazaifu Tenman-gu. Our top recommendation is a trip to the Nanzo-in Temple to see a massive reclining Buddha which is the largest bronze statue in the world. Nanzo-in isn’t accessible by large buses, and your ship might not offer a tour, meaning planning ahead is essential.

As Japan’s 6th largest city, Fukuoka has anything and everything you may wish to see or do, from tranquil temples to famous Hakata Ramen shops, so be sure to plan ahead to make the most of your day!
