FUERTE AMADOR, Panama
Fuerto Amador cruise port lies on the southern end of the Panama Canal, and it is your gateway to Panama City, which is 5mi/8km away.
One of the most popular areas to see in Panama City is its historic district: Casco Viejo. Casco Viejo, also known as San Felipe, has a colorful charm with no shortage of rooftop bars, restaurants, and shops. Major points of interest include the Santo Domingo Church, the Panamanian History Museum, and Plaza Francia, which honors the 22,000 workers who died building the Panama Canal.
Further north along the waterfront, you’ll find El Malecón, a beautiful beachfront walking area that runs between Casco Viejo and Panama City’s financial district. For a birds eye view of the sweeping city, take a trip to Ancon Hill, which is the highest point in Panama City.
Eager to learn more about the Panama Canal? Start with a visit to Biosmuseo- a museum dedicated to the history of Panama and how the Panama Canal changed the world. The Miraflores Visitors Center (located 10mi/16km from the port) is another great opportunity to learn about the history of the Panama Canal. It offers a 3D film as well as 4 exhibits. True history buffs might wish to dive in even further with a trip to Panamá Viejo, or Old Panamá. The city was founded in 1519 and completely destroyed in the 1670s. You can walk around the ruins and learn about its significance.
If you want to get out of the hectic capital city and into nature, there are a handful of options. Soberania National Park is a 55,000 acre/220 sqkm national park that’s home to monkeys, jaguars, and over 500 different species of birds. For something a bit closer to the terminal, head to Punta Culebra—a nature center dedicated to the exploration of wildlife through science.
Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your day in Panama City!
