FREEPORT, Bahamas
Located on Grand Bahama, approximately 50 miles / 80 km’s off the Floridian coastline, Freeport is one of the northern-most cruise ports in the Caribbean.
There are multiple docking berths here, each with access to the port amenities, such as souvenir shops, restaurants, car rentals, and restroom facilities.
That being said, most points of interest for this port of call aren’t close to the cruise port- they all require transport to get to away from the port.
The major tourism center is the Port Lucaya Marketplace area, located 10 miles / 16km from the cruise port. Here you’ll find a concentration of shops, bars and restaurants all within walking distance to multiple beach areas.
Whilst the beaches and other water-based activities like snorkeling, diving and fishing are always popular here, so are the inland natural sites. Grand Bahama is home to three different national parks: Peterson Cay National Park, Lucayan National Park, and the Rand Nature Center. However always the popular pick for visitors is Garden of the Groves, a collection of beautiful manicured gardens with a small waterfall and birdlife.
There are often many touring options from this port of call, particularly due to the distance away from the port all the highlights are. If you do prefer to do things on your own, there are car rentals available, as well as taxi tours.
The most cost-efficient way of getting to the Port Lucayan marketplace however is via the port operated shuttled services. Prices may vary, but on last visit in early 2022, you can pool together with other travelers in a mini-van style shuttle for $6USD per person, each way.
