DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA
Durban is a diverse metropolitan city on the eastern side of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. It has a population of just over 3 million people, and has something for everybody.
If you want to have some fun in the sun, head to the Golden Mile, which is a beautiful stretch of beach front that is ironically, 3.7 mi/5.95 km long. You’ll find pristine sand, plenty of restaurants, and great waves if you’re keen to go surfing. Don’t love the beach? Head to Ushaka Marine World, which is home to the 5th largest aquarium in the world as well a water park with the highest water slide in the southern hemisphere.
Continue your time in nature with a stop by the Botanic Gardens. It was created in 1849, making it the oldest surviving botanic garden in South Africa. It’s a lush getaway full of unique plants and flowers. Or perhaps head to the Umgeni River Bird Park where you can see more than 200 species of birds.
For foodies, head to Florida Road. Florida Road is lined with century old Edwardian style buildings, cafes, and restaurants as well as galleries. There are all type of cuisines to choose from, and it’s a great stop for a morning coffee or relaxing dinner
Note: While downtown Durban has a few religious sites and the popular Victoria Street Market, the crime rates are quite high. If you choose to visit this side of Durban, exercise caution and secure your belongings.
There are great travel options outside of Durban as well. For a chance to see African wildlife, take a trip to the Tala Game Reserve. It is 50mi/80km inland from Durban, and is home to rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and other big game. For history lovers, consider a trip to The Nelson Mandela Capture Site (70mi/110km inland of Durban), which is where Nelson Mandela was apprehended for his anti-Apartheid activism acts in August 1952. It’s near Howick Falls, which boasts an impressive 310ft/85m cascade— a must see if near by.
Durban is a vibrant town with so many possibilities, and you’re sure to have an enjoyable day.
