DALIAN

Dalian is China’s largest ferry and cruise port, serving over 5 million passengers annually. Most of the traffic that runs through this port is domestic tourism, but Dalian has been making its way into cruise ship itineraries in recent years. 

The city itself is 7 million people strong, and it serves as a financial center for the region in addition playing a key role in maritime shipping in Northeast Asia. What makes Dalian unique is it's Russian and Japanese influence, which is evident through the architecture.

Key points of interest are spread out, and it is a region of China where English isn’t readily spoken. Taking a tour, either privately or pre-booked on your own, is highly recommended. Places to consider going include Labor Park, the Dalian Forest Zoo to see the pandas, and Xinghai Square, the largest square in the world. If you do wish to explore the city on your own, the city center is about 2 mi/ 3km from the cruise port, and your cruise line will likely offer a shuttle service.

TIP: If you are planning on exploring on your own, be prepared with a downloaded language translator app to help you communicate with taxi drivers, shop owners, and restaurant staff. Also, be sure to snap a picture of the cruise port sign to show your taxi driver in order to get back to the port without confusion.
