DAKAR, SENEGAL

Dakar is the cosmopolitan capital of Senegal that lies on the westernmost point of the continent of Africa. It has everything from bustling markets to beautiful beaches, and there’s something to do for all types of travelers.

Downtown Dakar is dominated by its markets. Kermel Market and  Sandaga Market are hubs of local life and you’ll find everything from shoes to fish to headphones. Other sites to see in the downtown area include the Museum of Black Civilizations, the Grand Mosque, Dakar Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, and the IFAN Museum of African Arts.

If you love art and handicrafts, then head north of the central downtown to Village des Artes to see local artists at work and to the Soumbedioune Handicraft Village for unique souvenirs. Also consider heading to the HLM Market for fabrics or the Loman Art House to see a private collection of contemporary African art.

City traffic, noise, and chaos isn’t for everyone. For a less frenetic day, consider going north to the tiny and peaceful island of Ile de Ngore for a day at the beach. Or take a trip to the island of Gorée, which is accessible via a ferry terminal right near the port. Gorée was the largest slave-trading center on the African coast, and the ruins from the forts and buildings remain.

Other travel opportunities include a trip 22mi/35km northeast of Dakar to Lake Retba. It’s familiarly known as the “Pink Lake” due to the high concentration of salt which microalgae thrive in. Another option is paying a visit to the Bandia Wildlife Reserve to see the likes of zebras, rhinos, and giraffes.

Whatever you choose to do, you’re sure to have a memorable day in Dakar.
