Not long ago a sleepy little fishing town, Costa Maya has sprung to life with the introduction of its seemingly ever expanding cruise docking facilities.

Upon arrival, you are greeted by a very large port complex, filled with shops, bars, restaurants, swimming pools, and even live flamingoes.

Whilst many cruise ship passengers don’t make it beyond this very self-contained port facility, there is in fact much beyond the gates to see.

Located approx. 2 miles / 3km from the port is the beach town of Muhahual. The port normally runs a shuttle there, and taxis are also available.

Just outside the port gate is one of the best options for families, and that is the Lost Mayan Kingdom attraction, a water park with 12 different waterslides at last count.

For history buffs, the best way to spend the day is a visit to Chacchoben, the archeological site located 44 miles / 70km inland from the port area.
