CASTRIES, SAINT LUCIA

Castries is the capital of St. Lucia, and it’s known for its beautiful beaches, abundant shopping, and lively pace.

If you want to kick back and relax, you’re in luck because you will find beautiful beaches everywhere. Take thing sup a notch with a visit to the County Rum Distillery where you can learn all about the history of sugar and rum.

For a day in nature, you have a few options to choose from. Consider heading to Pigeon Island, which is a national park with a concert venue, two small beaches, a museum, and various historical ruins from 18th century French and English battles. Or take a quick ferry ride to Marigot Bay, which is often revered as the prettiest natural harbor in the Caribbean. Adventure seekers might enjoy taking the 90 minute journey to La Soufriere, an active volcanic site- but be ready for the smell of sulfur!

Eager to shop? For duty free shopping, pay a visit to the Central Market or La Place Carenage. For a more local experience, head to Castries Market which has both a produce market and a craft market. Across the street you’ll find the Vendor’s Arcade, which has more handicrafts and souvenirs for sale.

History lovers can’t miss a visit to the Government House, which is perched halfway up Morne Fortune. Here you’ll find Le Pavillion Royal Museum, which is home to photographs, documents, medals, silverware, and more. Note: it is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
