BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS

Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados, and is situated on the southwest coast of the island. It’s known for its British colonial architecture, rich history, and, of course, its beaches.

The main thoroughfare is Broad Street, which is lined with duty-free shops and plenty of dining options. It leads to National Hero’s Square, which boasts an impressive fountain commemorating the advent of running of water on Barbados in 1865.

A popular point of interest in Bridgetown is the Carenage. It serves as a marina for yachts and excursion boats, and a pleasant boardwalk skirts the edges. Keep an eye out for The Chamberlain Bridge—this is where you’ll find Independence Arch, which was built in 1987 to recognize 21 years of independence.

Northeast of Bridgetown is Queen’s Park, which has one of the island’s two immense baobab trees that were brought to the island from West Africa in 1738. Here you’ll also find the Queen’s Park Art Gallery and the Queen’s Park House.

A quarter mile from Queen’s Park is Nidhe Israel Synagogue. This important building was formed by the Jews who left Brazil in the 17th century and introduced sugar cane to the island. It has an adjoining cemetery with tombstones dating back to the 1630s. Speaking of sugar cane… learn all about the history of rum at the Mount Gay Visitor Center.

Looking to get out of town? Consider an expedition to Harrison’s Cave to marvel at the 40 foot underground waterfall or the Andromeda Botanic Gardens. A visit to St. Nicholas Abbey or George Washington House are other popular options.

If you want to enjoy the Caribbean sun, Brownes Beach and Pebbles Beach are the places to be. You’ll find beach bars, clubs, and resort, making for an iconic Caribbean day.
