BEPPU

Beppu is a small sloping hill town with a population of 120,000 people located on Kyushu, Japan’s southern most island.

If a Japanese onsen (hot spring) experience is on your "must do" list, Beppu is certainly the location where you should have it! The area is famous for it's geothermal hot springs, notably the “eight hells of Beppu”, which are often visible from the cruise port.

Bonus Tip: Many onsens offer food that is cooked using steam from the hot springs, making for a unique culinary experience that shouldn't be missed!

The main downtown area of Beppu is 3 mi/ 5km from the port, and there you will find a handful of onsens, a shopping arcade, a mall that is a great place to pick up anything you may have forgotten, and plenty of ramen restaurants. If your ship does not offer a shuttle service, there will be taxis available at the cruise port.

Other travel opportunities lie south of the city, including the Umitamago Aquarium as well as the Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden, which is home to 1500 Japanese Macaques.

Whatever you choose to do, you are sure to enjoy your time in Beppu.
