BASSETERRE, SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS
Basseterre is the capital city and commercial heart of St. Kitts. It’s home to stunning beaches and bays as well as numerous important historical sites, making it a port that has something for everyone.
Starting with the beaches— there are a wide array of options ranging from sparkling black sand beaches on the northeastern side of the island to white sand beaches along the southeastern peninsula. For snorkeling, be sure to pay a visit to South Friar’s Beach or White House Bay.
If you want to learn about St. Kitts history, don’t miss a trip to the Brimstone Hill Fortress and Fort Charles—both played crucial roles during the war between the British and French in the 1600s. Also stop by the Romney Manor, a 17th century sugar plantation, and the Old Treasury Building and National Museum. Other key sites to see in Basseterre are Independence Square, The Circus and Berkely Memorial Clock Tower, the Church of Immaculate Conception, and St. George’s Anglican Church. (Tip: Near Romeny Manor is the home of Caribelle Batik, which sells handmade batik wraps, dresses, and wall hangings.)
Looking to get a different view of St. Kitts? Take a ride on the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. It was built as a mode to transport sugar from the plantations to the processing plants up until 2005. And today, it transports visitors like yourself through the natural beauty of the island.
