AMBER COVE

A fairly new port appearing on Caribbean cruise itineraries in recent years, the Amber Cove cruise center is a two-berth, cruise docking facility, that provides a launchpad for a lot of the great history and nature that the north side of the Dominican Republic has to offer.

Upon arrival, the first thing you’ll see is one of the longer cruise docking piers in this part of the world. The walk from the cruise docking berth to the welcome square area at the end of the pier is 2-2.5 ship lengths. If you’d prefer not to navigate this distance on foot, local Rickshaw style riders (see port photos below) offer a tips only service to escort you from the ship to the welcome square.

Speaking of said welcome square, this is generally where most cruise ships have their organized tours meeting. Check with your specific ship in advance. You will also find a handful of shops, food options, as well as a complimentary resort style pool to use at your leisure.

If you are looking to get further afield, and learn more about this part of the country, you have many options. 7 miles / 11km away is the historic colonial town of Puerta Plata, where you can see interesting religious architecture and niche museums, such as the Amber museum, as well as try some amazing Dominican products like coffee and chocolate.

A great options for families is the Ocean World Adventure Park, or a day at the beach could be found at Sosua Bay. One of the most popular options for active, adventure seekers however is Damajagua, affectionately known as 27 waterfalls.
