Located along the central-northern coastline of Iceland, after a picturesque sail-in, cruise ships dock quite close to the central downtown area of this town of 18,000 people. Walkable from the docking position, the town is relatively compact, but important to note it does rise up fairly steeply from the waterfront harbor area.

Highlight sightseeing spots in Akureyri include the church, art museum and botanical garden. There is also a collections of shops and cafes, as well as an in-town thermal pool swimming area.

A visit to Akureyri also allows travelers to visit some of the nearby natural highlights of this part of the country, including Lake Myvatn, as well as Godafoss Waterfall, one of the most spectacular natural sites in Iceland.

Most cruise lines will offer tours to these out of town sites, and on top of that, at the port there are a limited number of private tour drivers available. There are also car rentals nearby, but we’d recommend booking a rental in advance, simply due to limited numbers.
